Budget Sequestration Hits Home

Ok I’m gonna be a little self indulgent this morning because I’m in shock.  I’m an avid news watcher, I keep up on what’s going on in our country and the world.  When I’m behind, my husband keeps me informed.  The budget sequestration that the US Government has set up is about to affect us all in one way or another.  As you all know, my husband is retired military and we go the Scott Air Force Base probably twice a month to grocery shop.  You can’t beat the prices especially on meat.  It’s about a 30 minute drive, that’s why I only go twice a month.  Every quarter they have a Case Lot Sale, where they offer huge savings on bulk items and other things, mostly bulk.  I called to find out when the next Case Lot Sale and I was informed that because of sequestration, it’s cancelled until next May.   The woman on the phone said they would have “sidewalk sales” but couldn’t give me any dates.

To say that I was disappointed was an understatement.  We like to stock up on certain things and the Case Lot sale allows us to do that.  I know there’s Sam’s Club and Costco, but when you shop at the commissary we don’t pay sales tax, and when you are spending $100-200, that’s a nice savings.  Besides, when we go to Sam’s Club or Costco, we always spend a lot of money on things we don’t need.  Don’t let us go out there hungry, we taste all the food they are cooking and end up buying the food.  They do that on purpose, marketing is everything in those stores.  We don’t have those distractions with the Case Lot sales, they are outside in the parking lot, and no one cooking and trying to sell you food you don’t need.  Gotta sit down and figure out a new strategy.

It’s really new, but the new budget is working so far.  We’ll see, summer is coming and the girls need a few new pieces.  I’ll just hit up some of my budget friendly stores like Ross, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Target, Burlington Coat Factory and a few more.  They both need new swimming suits and cover ups this year, they are so expensive.  I think even found one for myself, a big step for me….and a cover up.  I haven’t owned a swimming suit since I was in my 20s, so this will be interesting.

My family has been in a budget sequestration for quite some time, it’s a way of life for most of us.  I’m grateful for what we have and how I work our budget, it’s a skill and I’m proud of how I spend our money.  There’s always room for improvement, and I’m working on those now.  Do you have tips to share on how you manage your budget?

Blogger Meet Up

Sunday I went to a blogger meet up here with the STL Blogger group on Facebook.  We met up at this very trendy bakery named Nadoz Euro Bakery Cafe.  They were very gracious and wonderful hosts, we received a free fresh juice beverage from the juice bar, it was mixed with beets, pineapple and carrots.  It was called Tropical Beet juice, I know it doesn’t sound good but it was delicious.   They used all of the pineapple too, core and skin.  The food was light, and delicious.  We also had a little wine, I took about two sips.  The turn out was low even though 20 people did RSVP, 8 bloggers showed up for the event.   I knew one of bloggers, Robyn Wright of Robyn’s Online World.  We introduced ourselves and talked about our blogs, ate a little  and mingled.  One of the owners told me that she follows me!   That’s the power of handing out business cards.  So glad I took them, I need to have them done again, the font is too small.

I’m convinced that we need to meet in real life, online is wonderful but we need to get out and enjoy the company of others, even if it is every once and a while.   I would even like to do another blogger meet up there.   It was nice to get out after the snow storm last week and before the next one comes this week.   We had a good time.

Then I finally got a chance to go in this store, Soft Surroundings.  I’ve gotten a few catalogs in the mail, but never went there until today.  I found about 3 or 4 things I wanted but settled on some honey butter balm that felt so good on my dry hands, I just had to have it.  It was a treat and I’m glad I purchased it.  When I get an opportunity, I’m going back.  It was a true shopping experience, very different from walking in a normal boutique.  Well probably because I haven’t really been to a boutique in a very long time.  The clothing is for the mature woman, relaxed pieces kind of reminds me of Chicos a little.  They sell clothing, shoes and accessories, balms and butters for your body, bedding and some accessories for your home.

Retail Therapy

Yesterday I got out of the house to do one of my favorite things, shopping!  I’ve been stuck in the house working, getting this house together, and my other personal issues I’ve been through the last few months.  I love retail therapy, I don’t necessarily spend a lot of money, I just love getting out, checking out discounts, people watching and it was a wonderful day here yesterday, around 68 which is good for Missouri in November.  I like to shop alone, tried the girlfriend thing years ago, wasn’t my thing.  I’ll go when I have a friend in town or lunch, but most of the time I shop alone, unless I take the girls.  I started at my favorite grocery chain, Whole Foods, got a few pork chops for my husband and spent a nice dime for them.  I purchased a few other items and headed to my next therapy session….Nordstrom Rack.

I. Love. Nordstrom. Rack.  I go to the accessories first, check out to see what the designer purses are selling for, then head for the shoes.  I found these, but didn’t get them.  I needed casual shoes, but I’ll keep my eye on these cute little booties

.

I picked up a sweater for me, and pajamas for the girls and got out.  That was great for me, because I could have done some serious damage.  Serious.  Next and last was DSW Shoe Warehouse….one of my favorite shoe stores.

If I just go to look around to see what they have, I always find something.  When I go to look for a specific shoe, I can’t seem to find what I want.  There were plenty of shoes and I tried on about 10 pairs, but it was something just not right with all of them.  I was looking for a comfort shoe, something I can wear with great support that didn’t cost me an arm and a leg.  I also wanted something that wasn’t geriatric looking, I know I’m asking for a lot.  I’m 50, and I still have great style.  You may be asking, what did I get for my husband?  Nothing, because he’s getting a new computer very soon and he got something last week.

I was gone all day yesterday, I ran my errands, then did my retail therapy.  It was a good day, I was in bed very early.  Have a great weekend!

It’s My Birthday!!!

I made it to my 50th birthday!  Yes, thank you Lord!  It’s been a wonderful journey so far and I’m looking forward to the rest of my life.  No regrets, just lessons and adjustments!

My youngest and I did a little shopping yesterday, went to Nordstrom and Whole Foods, next door to each other.  I was going alone, but she asked to join me.  That’s my talker so we had a good time shopping and hanging out.  I discovered yesterday that she is growing out of the size 7-16!  She tried on 4 dresses, and they were all too short.   I’m not too thrilled about Junior sizes, but I guess I better get ready.  It does depend on the store because we love Justice, such a cute store for girls.  I did return those shoes, no big deal just didn’t match anything.

We walked around Nordstrom, tried on a few items and left with some Neutrogena Body Wash.  I love that stuff.  Then we walked over to Whole Foods, purchased a few things, got a little lunch.  We ate our lunch in the truck which was fun.  I wanted to take pictures for the post, but she didn’t want to take pictures while she was eating, don’t really blame her.  Then we headed to TJ Maxx where I did find a nice summer bag.  I love summer purses, they’re carefree and lightweight.  I grabbed that and then we headed home.

I went to pick up my husband from work, sitting and was talking to him on the bluetooth in the truck while he finished his day.  I forgot to turn the ignition back to off and guess what?  I drained the battery, couldn’t believe that!  We took care of that, but probably need a new battery.  Like the baby picture of me?  I had to take this off Facebook, couldn’t find the original.  Well, off to work and enjoy the rest of my day!

Are You Worth The Price?

I participated in the Northwestern Habilitation Employee Health Fair yesterday in the St Louis area.  It’s a facility for mentally disabled adults, and a couple of the nurses there organized the health fair for all the employees.  It was well organized and put together.  There were fourteen vendors including myself.  There was PNC Bank, AFLAC, Sam’s Club, Medical West, a representative from the company with EAP, Usborne Books & More, Mary Kay, Avon, Organo Gold, Scentsy, a massage therapist, a woman who does exercises with weighted hula hoops and my Soul Purpose booth.  We were all networking and talking with the employees, I was feeling very comfortable if I may say so myself.  I was talking about the Soul Purpose products, getting people registered for my giveaway and really networking with the other vendors.

Disclaimer….I am not a hater, really.  I will tell any woman, do your “thang” to make a living for yourself.   I’m sure trying, see my display?

Here comes the lady selling the knockoff designer purses, sunglasses and jewelry!  Have you seen a swarm of ants when they discover a new crumb of bread or something on the sidewalk?  They scurry over to get to it and work that crumb like it was gold!  I have never seen something like that until yesterday.  They dropped us all like yesterday’s news and went over to the lady selling the purses!  She could barely get her tables set up before they were swarming her table grabbing those purses, trying on glasses and jewelry.  She couldn’t keep up with them!  One woman spent $150 on four purses.  I was astonished (I really was) looking at the women hunt for the purse of their liking.  Needless to say, she had a very successful day.  The ladies were all walking around with their new purchases, proud of them, talking about what they were gonna wear with them, etc.   This is my question….

How long will knockoff purses last?  They aren’t as durable as the “real” thing, so why keep buying them?  I will admit I’m a bit of a snob when it comes to this.  I shop at the discount stores, I love a bargain.   I’ll shop just about anywhere if they have something I like.  I learned long time ago when my girls were small that you can’t buy all their summer clothes from Walmart or Kmart because the quality wasn’t that good.  One good wash & dry and they shrunk, or the original shape was gone.  I shop there and buy things from both stores occasionally,  but I don’t put clothing I buy from either store or stores like these in the dryer and I wash in cold water only.  Also, check out my girl Donna on her new blog, discount thief , she tells us where the discounts are so we can save money.  Ok back to the purses….I own several designer bags, but every last one I’ve purchased has been at a discount.  The Coach outlet in Las Vegas, Dooney & Burke online with their 50% off sale every month, and my new favorite is the Army Exchange because the Mr is retired military.  In this picture of me, I got my Michael Kors for $100 less than retail!  The point I’m trying to make is if you are going to spend your money on a designer purse, then by all means do it, but get the real thing.  You are worth it, don’t cheat yourself, please ladies.

I know some are gonna say, we can’t afford the real thing.  Then don’t buy it, that simple.  Get yourself a good quality purse that you can afford until you are able to buy a real designer bag.  That’s how I did it, and most of them I’ve had for years.  I don’t own that many because it’s not a priority.   Most of mine are vintage ones  from my mother, those are all over 25 years old.  She was a true diva.  Let me know what you think on this subject, maybe I’m way off.

Lovely Day

My best friend from high school was in town yesterday.  We went to Oprah’s Lifeclass (more on that in a later post).  She lives in Tulsa, OK and I live in St Louis.  We are from Kansas City, MO.  We haven’t spent time together in probably 23 years when I went to Tulsa to visit her many years ago.  She would come see me when I lived in Kansas City, but we haven’t had a day to have fun in a long time.  I miss her, and remember why we are such good friends.  She is my sister, I had the stronger personality, louder and bolder.  She is outspoken, she did it in a gentler, less vocal way than me.  I think that’s what I loved about her.  We met in the 10th grade, and immediately became friends.  I remember when her mom came to my house to meet my parents, so we could really hang out and go places together and really be good friends.   It was six of us who used to hang out together, but she and I were the closest.  We have been through so much together, I was her maid of honor at her wedding, she was mine, been through death of our parents and the challenges we’ve both had in our adult lives.  We have both shared secrets that we are taking to the grave, and we celebrate life and the love of God together.

We went to the mall, shopped, laughed and talked, took pictures together like teen aged  girls holding the cell phone up and cheesing for the camera and even asked strangers to take pictures of us.  We went to the Cheesecake Factory for lunch and didn’t even eat cheesecake!   I regret that now of course, because it’s back to the grind.  The cheesecake is rich and I was too full to eat anything else.  I know, should have gotten that to go.  We talked about our mid-life journey, keeping our youthful looks, but not looking like we are 20 or 70.  Shopping at our age can be a challenge, because a lot of the clothing is made for younger women.  I absolutely LOVE Nordstrom Rack, we had a ball there.  I discovered she loves 4-5 inch heeled shoes, while I was looking wedges and cute flats.  I was disappointed at Macy’s, but can always find a bargain.  The Plus Size department in Macy’s had clothing made for women more conservative than I am.  My bestie agreed too.  We are both beautiful plus sized, fashion forward women and neither one of us ever have a problem finding beautiful clothes.

I just spoke with my friend this morning before they hit the road back to Tulsa.  We made a promise to see more of each other and that means me going to Tulsa to see her.  It’s not something we can do every month because of our busy lives, but we will plan trips to visit one another.  Thank you Veronica for the wonderful day and for remembering that we must take time for each other, and nurture our relationships as well.  I love you dearly.

Spring Break

My girls were on spring break this week.  They are truly on vacation, and think that means vacation from everything,  chores included!   My younger daughter had the nerve to tell me she was on vacation and can’t she just rest.  Really now??   Excuse me….I am not your maid.  I’m the CEO, chauffeur, cook, and so much more, but not the maid.  It’s gonna be a long week for them. My girls are 16 and 11, and love to spend money.   I don’t mind giving them what they want within reason, but they will have to spend a little time spring cleaning this week.  Basically that means I want them to clean their room, under the bed, behind the dresser, etc.  That’s all, just a good cleaning and then it’s back to business as usual.   It will only take a few hours if they would just do it.  I’m not gonna nag, fuss or yell either.  I will simply keep my money and spend it on something or someone, me.   They are good girls, make the grades, follow the rules and don’t get in trouble much at home.

We usually do something fun when they are on spring break, and this year will be the same.  We’ll probably do a tourist thing, we all like the zoo or Botanical Garden.  The weather here in the midwest is nice, so we must get out and do that.  We’ll probably go see a movie and if they have done their spring cleaning, we’ll hit the mall.  I’m sticking to this one, I promise!  Ok so the youngest one NEEDS new sneakers.  You should see the ones she’s wearing now.  Too embarrassed to talk about it.  She’ll get those because of need, the rest will be on chores this week.

They have had a pretty good week, got their spring cleaning done.  So that means we are off to the mall today to do a little shopping.  We are also going to Hammers Food & Fun for a late birthday celebration for my oldest daughter.  I love it, they can run around have a ball, while we chill and watch them.   Have a wonderful weekend!

Whitney
