Cabin Fever

Around this time every year, everyone in the house starts to get some serious cabin fever, especially when it’s 74 degrees in St Louis.  You step outside, almost forget it’s the middle of winter with the exception of the bare trees and brown grass.  It’s so balmy and warm, everyone was out and about.  The joggers, walkers, baby strollers, pets and their owners were all out enjoying the weather today.

Here’s the part that makes cabin fever so hard….it will be a high of 32 degrees tomorrow.  Back to the coats, hats, scarves and gloves.  We know better but can’t help it, we all love warm weather, at least I do.  I didn’t bust out in a maxi dress and sandals, but I did put on a sweater and no hat or gloves, that was nice.   We haven’t had any missed school days around here, which is good because that means they’ll get out in May.

My youngest acts like she is gonna die if she doesn’t get outside to play on the weekends.  She can be the only kid outside, it doesn’t matter to her.  She will also play with any kid, any age just so she can be outside.  She tells me all the time how boring it is to be home.  I’ve tried to teach both of them how to crochet, make jewelry and other little crafty things.  My oldest makes friendship bracelets, and she enjoys it.  She doesn’t have a problem keeping herself busy or entertained.  I take them to the library on the weekends, both of them love reading.  When I start my new direct sales business, I plan on taking them with me to my parties/presentations so they can assist and watch me work.  Hoping that will be a positive experience for them, let them see mom working.

One thing I would like all three of us to do is create vision boards.  I want the girls to focus on something positive and positive people.  I’m currently looking into organizations that they can join that support girls and the sensitive issues they have.  We have plenty of supplies to get started, this will be a great project to do in the next few weeks.  It’s easier in the summer months, because they like to swim and I sit at the pool and read on my iPad.

Well, we have another 2-3 months left, so I’ll just sit back, kick my feet up with my warm fuzzy socks and enjoy the rest of the winter.  How do you handle cabin fever?

Finding Your Happy

Have you found that sometimes when you are going through some things that it can be difficult to find that happy within?   I listen to The Michael Baisden Show on a regular basis, not everyday but I tune in several days a week.  He was talking about living your dream, what would you do for free?  Good question, and my answer is blogging, making jewelry, and a couple of other things.  I really enjoy making jewelry and blogging, it’s relaxing and a for of therapy for me.  I realized when I started blogging that I found something that I truly enjoy.  Would I like to make money from blogging?  It depends, as long as I can keep my voice, it doesn’t stress me out and I can still enjoy it, then yes.  I’ve read a couple of blogs where women started blogging, because successful and have walked away from it because it’s not fun or fulfilling to them any longer.

I remember when I started making jewelry, I would make pieces and practically give them away because I wanted to get my name out locally.  What I found out and I learned quickly is people didn’t want to pay me, but would pay top dollar for retail or to go and let someone else make it for them.  One woman wanted me to make a Mothers’ bracelet for her, with her three kids name on each strand.  I made these bracelets with sterling silver beads, Swarovski crystals, and sterling silver findings.  I agreed and gave her my price, she wanted me to go buy the materials, make the jewelry and then she would pay.  Ummm, I was born at night, but not last night!  Who did she think I was?  I told her that she would have to pay for the materials and I would let her know how much I would charge to make the bracelet.  Well needless to say, I didn’t make the bracelet for her.  She did go to a local bead store and paid $130.00 for the bracelet.  My price was about $30 cheaper, but you learn.  After that little incident, I slowed down on making jewelry for other people, because I wasn’t gonna spend my time making hand made jewelry with quality products and not get paid for my work.  Plus I could tell that it would take away the joy I have for making jewelry.

Blogging is something else I enjoy, I do it at my pace and I love it.  I write from my heart, I have so much to share about my past, present and future.  I share stories and situations that I hope will help and entertain.  I would like to build a brand, but that takes time and hard work.  Will I be successful at blogging?   Depending on your definition of success.  I would like to build my reader list and hopefully have more people comment, but I’m just fine with the pace that’s it’s going at the present time.

I’ll just stay in my lane and do what makes me happy at the present time.  Hope you all can identify with me and do what makes you happy.  Here’s a few pieces that I’ve made, the brown on the left is a necklace, the other two are bracelets.  Have a wonderful evening.

All That Glitters…

I love jewelry..the shinier the better.  It’s my hobby and I enjoy it.  I love creating something that you can wear with beads, wires and baubles.  When I sit down to make a piece of jewelry, I get absolutely lost in the process.  I have taken 20 minutes to 3 hours to make a piece, just depending on what’s involved in the process.  I have been asked to make jewelry in the past, and have repaired broken pieces for friends.

I have been blessed to now have the time to design and make jewelry.   I’m not in any hurry, I’m just going to make pieces, show them to people, on my Facebook, Twitter, Google+ pages and of course my blog.  I used to make bracelets and earrings as gifts for my friends.  I’ve been asked to make gifts for their family and friends.  My pieces are simple, classic and pretty.

Do you have a hobby that you have considered turning into a side hustle or business?   What recommendations and suggestions do you have?  I am the research queen, so I’m constantly on the Internet researching, that’s how I found different websites where people sell their jewelry.  I’ve also discovered a wonderful website called Etsy.  It’s an website where you can buy/sell handmade or vintage items.  They have Etsy Communities, it’s very interesting.  Check it out, http://www.etsy.com.  One day I will be able to share my Etsy page with you.  Be encouraged, and let your creative side show.

Take Time To Renew Yourself

Women are caretakers, it’s comes natural for us.  We have different degrees of nurturing, but it’s just what we do.  How often do you take the time to make sure you have a renewed mind, body & spirit?  Do you get enough sleep?  I take that self assessment every time I start to feel sluggish.   Of course with menopause you feel tired all the time, if you take hormones they help a little.  I make sure I get a good nights’ sleep to renew myself.

One of the ways I renew myself is taking me time.  I work from home so you would think I’m able to do that all of the time but I don’t.  When I’m not working, I’m doing something around the house, running errands or mom taxi.  One of the things I do that gives me that refreshed feeling is when I go to the hair salon.  I get to relax, let my hair stylist take care of me while getting my time in with the ladies at the salon.  We always have a good time, sharing stories about our lives, and Stacey and I are always sharing our entrepreneur dreams and plans with one another.  I always leave with a smile.

Music also helps renew my spirit….gospel, old school R&B and jazz.  When I play my music, my mind travels to the time, place or situation of each song, they all have a story about a time in my life.  I have always related to music like that.  I’m working on my YouTube channel, that’s my new thing!  I have Pandora Radio, iHeartRadio and our CD collection.  It’s truly relaxing and it’s a must for me.

Jewelry making is something I started about six years ago and I love it!  I go bead shopping, and will literally spend hours in there!  So I have to order online most of the time because I get in trouble. I like taking the beads and creating something.  I like working with crystals and sterling silver.  They used to call me LaBeada at work.  It’s relaxing but hard on the eyes…can you say bifocals??

I read my bible and pray to unwind every evening, I’m currently reading a series on YouVersion “Living a Divinely Inspired Life” on my iPad.  I like to read before I go to bed so the last thing on my mind is God and how I can get closer to him.

Share with me how you renew yourself…
