What’s Brewing at The Cafe

Hey everyone, it’s been a busy day so far.  My husband was off for a few days so we ran a few errands and hung out together.  The weather here today is beautiful, need to wash the truck for the weekend.  I do not like driving a dirty vehicle.

Update on the money I found at Marshall’s, the manager called and told me I could come get the money.  I went to the store, we talked for a bit she wanted me to have it and thanked me for being so honest and allowing the person to come back and try to claim the money.  She told me it was a blessing for me and to enjoy it.  I told her I was gonna be a blessing and donate it to the Youth program at my church.  They are having a bowling party next Friday and it’s $4.00 per child and the money will pay for 20 children to go to the party.   This experience just lets me know there are still good people in this world, we shouldn’t give up on people.    I just wouldn’t feel good spending the money, so I’ll pay for 20 kids to enjoy the bowling party next week, but I’m not volunteering!!!

I try not to preach to people, that’s not my style.  I will encourage, support, cry with you, be that ear when you need to rant.  With that said, I have decided to clean up my Facebook friend list, really.  A couple of days ago someone that went to the same high school I did shared a video of a woman giving lessons on how to have oral sex with a man.  She was using a dildo and her comment was, I already know how to do this but I wanted to share it with you all.  I didn’t even know Facebook allowed videos like this.  I’ve seen the big booty pictures, men seem to love those, but never have I seen a video of a woman teaching you how to perform oral sex.  I’m sorry, that was just over the top for me.  Sex is so very personal, it shouldn’t be shared with the public when you post something like this.  I don’t need to know that you are a master at the act, too much information.  That’s why you can set up private groups on Facebook to share things like that.

I am officially announcing my newest business venture.  I am a Independent Representative for Silpada Designs.  I love jewelry, especially sterling silver jewelry.  It has a great compensation program and a even better hostess program.  So for your sterling jewelry needs, I’m your new girl.  I have a website at Silpada Designs where you can look at the catalog and place orders if you would like.  My Open House is next Saturday at my home.  It’s an uphill battle, but I’m willing to take the challenge because the job market is slow.  My customer service job that I do from home has slowed down a lot.  I won’t panic, just keep pushing and something will happen.  So, I’m a contractor taking customer service calls, blogger and I sell Soul Purpose Lifestyle Company products and Silpada Designs Jewelry.   A girl’s gotta do, what a girl’s gotta do….

We all have so many things we work hard for, I’m doing my part to make a living and help provide for my family.  My husband is understanding and I want to take some of the pressure off him.  Right now, I’m in true hustle mode.  Have a good weekend everyone.

Women In Combat II

Part 2 ~ Does Equality Mean One Standard.
In Part 1 I wondered if filling combat jobs is really what women wanted.  In Part 2 I am of the mindset that this conversation is not adequately framed to provide the appropriate discussion on the subject.  The question is not whether women should be allowed to serve in Combat jobs because when Combat comes calling either you get your @$$ to work and fight or you run or you die.  To me the question is whether women should be allowed to serve in the Infantry or Infantry related jobs.  I say ‘No’ until someone can practically explain to me how we implement this decision.  I’m over 6 feet tall and weigh approximately 225 pounds.  Over my career I’ve been at the top or near the top of all physical fitness requirements the Marine Corps demanded of me.  I’ve served in the Infantry and I can tell you there were a lot of men that could not handle the job; and yet they had no option.  I accept and believe the premise that there are a few women that can handle the job.  The issue is whether this is what’s best for the military.  How do a handful of women, in a group of a thousand men handle themselves, and how do the services treat them?  What are the negative impacts brought about by taking this action?  Have women’s demand for equality outpaced practicality?  War actually has only one standard, and if you say there will be only one standard for service members, then you must remove the Gender adjustments applied to physical training.  Using the current ‘male’ standard would most assuredly mean, in my opinion, almost 90% of women might fail physical fitness requirements for most Infantry type jobs.  So what do we do?  Raise the current physical standard for women or drop the current standard for men?  Do we set women up for physical and career failure or degrade the Infantry’s combat effectiveness by lessening the requirements.  In either scenario War and Combat do not care because they have only one standard.  Remember, some men cannot keep this standard and we have been bred since the beginning of time to go to war.

Another point to address is how do we assign women to these jobs?  Everyone keeps saying a woman should be allowed to enter if they want to.  A lot of men don’t want to go into the Infantry but the service forces them to.  Do we apply the same standard to women?  If we say ‘yes’ then I would surmise we should expect a huge increase in claims from both sexes of unfair treatment by women who were ‘forced’ to serve in the Infantry.  What we currently do with Infantrymen who aren’t performing is training them harder.  So, now we’ve increased the rate of injuries; bone fractures, muscles tears, back problems, estrogen and fertility concerns.  Is the Service (society) going to tell women they are being assigned to the Infantry and may run the risk of having fertility complications?  Keeping a military ‘Can Do’ attitude, I say we can do that but when a woman says ‘I’d like to have children someday so I’d like to go into another job’ how do we respond. Should it not be with the one standard and an ‘oh well, suck it up.  You’re in the Infantry now girl!’  That’s what we might do and say to a man so why not same to a woman.  Remember, equality at all cost.  War is not for the weak.

Lingerie Football League

I really enjoy blogging.  I’m getting better with researching and finding things to blog about that has some interest to women of a certain age.  Which means I look at everything that comes on the news, Internet, social media including but not limited to everything pop culture.    The Lingerie Football League has announced it’s expansion team for Omaha, NE and St Charles, MO which is a suburb of St Louis.  It’s been all over the news here, not all of it good either.  I love football, I’m a Kansas City Chiefs fan.  I’ve never seen the ladies of the Lingerie Football League play but I included a video for your viewing pleasure.  This is what has me shaking my head at the league….

Theses women are no longer paid to play football.  The founder of the league, Mitch Mortaza doesn’t pay the players.  He changed it from a professional league with the players getting a cut of the revenue to an amateur organization and they have to pay for their own health insurance.  He admits that his target is mostly beer drinking college students.  They are not allowed to comment on personal matters, which caused most of the Toronto Triumph to quit in October 2011 in protest.  I also don’t understand other than the women enjoying the game and wanting the opportunity to bring attention to football for women, but because their bodies take some serious abuse playing in lingerie.  This is what I mean about us supporting one another and not buying into gimmicks and concepts that make us look like we’ll go for anything.  They aren’t getting paid, why ladies?  Football is a full contact sport, you may not hit as hard as men, but our bodies aren’t built like theirs either.  You have shoulder, elbow and knee pads but nothing to protect your breast but a bra?   No pads for the rest of your body?  This wouldn’t be an issue if women would just say, NO to things that are made to exploit us!  I’m not gonna let you capitalize and make millions of dollars from me running up and down a football field in lingerie.  I could almost understand if they were getting a salary.  This is not about hate, it’s about how this man is getting paid to promote the sport using beautiful women in lingerie and not paying them at all.

I understand once our children are adults, they do what they want….I get that.  I just don’t want to see corporations and people take advantage of women and people less fortunate than them.  It’s our job as mature women to encourage and lift our young sistahs, whether they are our daughters, friends, church members or co-workers.  Our bodies aren’t made to take that kind of abuse without protection.  I would just like to see the same protection, concern and some kind of salary that the NFL gives their players.  Sometimes you have to rant, and I just couldn’t let this one go without giving my opinion on the subject.  Tell me what you think…and encourage a young woman today please.

Entrepreneur Spotlight ~ Nadine Abraham Thompson

I’m back with my entrepreneur spotlight, and this week I would like you all to meet the woman behind Soul Purpose Lifestyle Company, Nadine Abraham Thompson.  She is a visionary, who created a line of natural, botanically based beauty and wellness products and a community of direct sellers who would be able to represent the brand she has created and share in her vision.   Nadine, who is the founder and CEO started Soul Purpose in 2008 with a mission for creating business opportunities primarily for women of color.   After years of being discriminated against because of race, gender and weight, Nadine decided it was time to redefine her life and  become an advocate for women of color to help us become entrepreneurs, become successful and control our source of wealth.

Nadine’s socially responsible attitude is one that we all appreciate about Soul Purpose.  It’s her goal to run a green organization, all of the products are organic and contain no harmful additives such as sulfates, parabens, or petroleum.  Nadine is well known in the direct selling business community, receiving many awards including but not limited to The Power 50 in Network Marketing/Direct Selling.

I love Nadine’s story because she has the drive to keep her vision and see that the products she created will continue to serve women for years to come.  For those of us that want to be successful in this business, she has a comprehensive program that details how we will become successful.  One of my problems I used to have was feeling inadequate because my career didn’t go where I thought it should have.  I am in control of my career now, and being associated with a brand as Soul Purpose has done just that….help me determine my purpose.  I have a lot of work to do on building my brand, but I have set the foundation.  This blog and Soul Purpose Lifestyle Company are my goals.  I thank God daily for finding my niche, it’s been a process and as I progress, I will not give up.

I hope my stories on entrepreneurs over 40 inspires you to reach for the stars in whatever you do, whether it’s starting a business, organization or project.  Have a wonderful weekend.

Entrepreneur Spotlight ~ Sara Blakely

Part of uplifting women is to share our stories.  I’ve decided to start sharing stories of women who have made a difference for us, whether it’s a business woman, a corporation run by a woman, or someone not famous, but who has had an affect on women.  Who better to start off with than Sara Blakely.   I know you all have heard of her and read her story, very inspiring, great motivation and what a success!  I am one of her customers, I have a serious collection of Spanx products, from the heavy duty to the lighter version.  I am faithful Sara, I even subscribe to her video channel on YouTube.  I absolutely love Spanx!

Sara has the work ethic that is necessary to make her the success she is today, and I honor and feature you as the first woman who makes a difference on my blog.  You know I love the fact that is is over 40, although she made her billions before she turned 40.  Women over 40, don’t give up your dreams, whatever they are.  When she was searching for a patent attorney, she wanted a female, but couldn’t find one in the state of Georgia.   That didn’t stop her, she kept on working and pushing to get a patent on her product.  Then the boost from Oprah?   That’s exactly how we should support one another when we are trying to establish ourselves in the business community.

I remember purchasing Spanx before she was featured on Oprah.  I purchased the Assets by Sara Blakely in Target, when my budget wasn’t quite at the Spanx level.  Of course I was too delighted when Lane Bryant finally started selling them.  It didn’t matter how much they cost, because they helped me look better in anything I wore.  I am a woman with hips, I’m 2 sizes bigger in in the hip area, so Spanx was a great product for me.  The Spanx makes my appearance very neat and they are comfortable.  Now it does take a minute to get them up sometimes, but once they are on it’s wonderful!

Our hats are off to you Sara, thank you for being an inspiration to all women who work hard to get their business started, it’s not easy but worth it once you turn the corner and get that  entrepreneur spirit running.

Midweek Motivation

Hey everyone, hope you all are having a good week so far.  It’s amazing what you can do if you believe in yourself.  I had that, “what if” belief in myself, but fear kept me from enjoying life completely.  I had to change that and let go of fear, it was holding me back in so many ways.

I am pushing myself beyond my comfort zone and when that ugly feeling of fear enters my thoughts and spirit, I quickly remove those thoughts and reaffirm beliefs in myself and my goals.  In Psalm 34:4 David sought God to deliver him from fear, and that is what we must do when we allow fear to enter our mind and soul.  Ask God to remove fear from your spirit and mind set.   No more fear and small thinking for this girl!    I also used to think that because I’m turning 50 this year, that my choices were limited because of my age.  Isn’t that crazy?   We must stop allowing fear and feelings of being inadequate stop us from achieving our goals.

Currently, I do customer service work from home.  It helps out with the household, little extra here and there.  I have done customer service work for a very long time, and it’s time to take my skills and experience to the next level.  I’m not afraid, just ready to challenge myself.  I’ll keep you all posted on my plans very soon.

My health is also on my agenda.   I’m exercising 3-4 days a week, walking and Zumba on Wii.  I downloaded an app to my iPhone that helps me track my steps and the distance I walk.  I have been walking 3 miles and over 4400 steps and I didn’t realize it!  That’s why I’m so tired when I finish!  My diet is doing pretty good, I try to make sure I keep fresh food, fruits, veggies, nuts and water in my daily regiment.   Being transparent is a way for me to be honest with myself.  I share to keep me on top of my game.  Enjoy the rest of your day.

It’s Almost Over…

Hi everyone, I know it’s been a few days since my last post.  Let me explain…I work from home and I’m training for a new client.  It has been so stressful, taking a course online in a virtual classroom.  It’s about 52 people and 2 instructors.  This course requires self study as well as classroom participation.  I’ve passed the final assessment, but have one more big step and I’m done.

If you are interested in working from home, go to http://www.theworkathomewoman.com and check out all the information provided on this wonderful website.  They have part-time, full-time and other opportunities available for women.   I’m going to put this link as one of my favorite blogs so you can access it when you visit my blog.

I enjoy working from home, I really do.  It takes discipline to work from home and you have to be the kind of person that’s ok not having daily interaction with others.  It’s an adjustment, but has turned out to be one of the best moves I have made.  It has allowed me flexibility because I set my own hours, started my blog, make jewelry and be home for my family.  I never thought I would be the kind of woman that worked from home.  Times have changed, the economy has changed, and there are many opportunities to work from home.  I’m constantly researching ways I can generate income working from home with my computer.  Do some research if working from home is something that you have a desire for.  Don’t forget to check out The Work at Home Woman, it will make you take a serious look at your career situation.  I’ll be back in a few days, hopefully certified and ready to work for my new client!  Pray for a sista!
