It’s been quite some time since I’ve posted about my hair. It’s been two years since I made the decision to stop using chemicals on my hair, relaxer and hair color. I’ve enjoyed watching my hair grow from the TWA to what it is now. Discovering the different hair textures I have, which is probably 4 different textures, and learning to appreciate and how to take care of my hair. I’m a low maintenance kind of woman, even when I had relaxed hair. I would go and let my stylist relax and put a semi permanent color and she would give me a roller set and I would either wear it in a roller set or she would wrap it. That’s all, I didn’t using curling or flat irons on my hair because I knew how damaging they could be. I would go every two weeks and my hair was very healthy.
I know a lot of people and some natural hair blog and enthusiasts want you to believe that using chemicals will make your hair unhealthy and that’s far from the truth. It’s all the manipulation and stress we put on our hair, and women putting the chemicals on themselves and not really knowing how to care for their hair. I know because I am a trained cosmetologist, I learned about hair, how it grows, how to use sodium hydroxide (relaxer) and how to properly use hair dye.
The first picture is from March 2012 and the other one is from December 2013. Most of our hair shrinks, so if you stretch it, it’s just past my shoulders. You can see that gray patch that I’m used to, although some days I would like to consider a henna treatment, but it looks messy and it takes a long time to do it.
One of the things I see in the natural hair community is the same thing women did when they wore relaxers. Abuse and over manipulation of the hair. They will put all kind of products on their hair in the name of “natural” not really knowing what they are using. They are impatient, they want their hair the same length as the person that owns the blog of Facebook group. I see it all the time. I keep my regiment very simple. I use what is called the LOC system, L~leave in conditioner, O~oil, C~cream based product. I like Shea Moisture and As I Am the most. Since I work from home, I keep my hair in twists, either two strand twists or flat twists. I don’t use a comb everyday and that takes stress of your hair.
Since it’s winter now and when I go out, I always wear a hat because I’m cold all the time. I use a satin scarf to protect my hair before I put a hat on it, to keep the material from the hat from drying my hair or causing any damage. I did that when my hair was relaxed too.
You all know how I feel about this, do you and do it well. It doesn’t matter how you wear your hair, just take care of it especially during the winter months.
