What’s Brewing at The Mocha Cafe

It’s finally Friday,  been a crazy week.  I was in battle with the school district this week about residency and proof.  It got pretty ugly, I had to call the state about the situation.   Loooonnnggg story but in the end, I got it taken care of without the drama they were trying to take me through.  It just made me wonder what else are state,  government agencies and private companies telling us that we just believe.  What they were trying to tell me didn’t make any sense and I was tired of running up there to adhere to their policy on residency.  It made me realize that we’ll go for anything if we don’t investigate and speak up for ourselves.

I’m joining Michelle over at Divas With A Purpose on a no spend challenge for the month of September, I need it.  I’m up for the challenge, go here for details.   I really don’t have the money to buy anything new and I would like to see if I can do it.  I’m setting it for me, not the girls since I haven’t really done any school shopping for them yet.  I don’t really need anything anyway, and I can shop my closet if I must.  Be interesting to see if I can do it.

This is the last day of the photo challenge I did with Beatrice Clay, it was a lot of fun.  She has a beautiful blog, check it out.  I had some quirky pictures, always genuine and showing my personality.  Here are a few of the pictures I’ve taken this month.

I took my SUV to the car wash yesterday and guess what?  You got it, it’s raining today, but we need the rain here, so it’s ok….just hate wasting that money and the rain guarantee is two days and it’s suppose to rain tomorrow.   It was a good week, can’t complain blessed to live to see another day.  Wishing you all a great and safe Labor Day weekend, the official last weekend of the summer!  Enjoy!

Business As Usual

Monday morning and I have plenty to do today….IEP meeting for my daughter, go to the school district to take two utilities, even though I brought them the deed to the house to prove residency.   They have strict residency requirements, but here’s the crazy part, I completed all the paperwork including my new name, my husbands information and when he went into the parent portal, they still have my old last name and work information.  They didn’t list his job at all, and that didn’t make him happy.  He said he was calling the district today, he does not want them to think he’s unemployed.  Lawd, let me get to them before he does.

I went to see Sparkle with some friends Friday and didn’t take one picture, I’m slipping.  I thought the movie was good, Whitney Houston did a good job of playing the strict, bible thumping mother of three daughters.  Jordan Sparks is very talented, she has beautiful range with her voice.  I saw her in concert four years ago when she opened for Alicia Keys, and to be honest with you I can’t remember her performance.  But do you know who did wonderful in the movie….Mike Epps!  He played the part of a flashy comedian who stole Sparkle’s sister from her boyfriend by flashing a diamond ring in her face!   It was funny, me and one of my friends sang during the whole movie.  I’m gonna take the girls to see the movie, I like to use movies and situations on TV as teachable moments for them.

I stayed home all weekend except to take my husband to and from work.  I’ve got to get busy though, we need to find a church home.  We decided together to find a new church home, he said he just didn’t feel comfortable at my old church and I can respect that and agreed.  It’s our goal to attend church as a family, worship together and that means attending a church that we both feel that we can accomplish three things, learn the word, hear the word and a place to worship.

My hair is graying faster as each day goes by, I had set a goal of no chemicals for one year.  I’m currently researching adding henna to my hair, and searching for a salon that specializes in natural hair care.  Actually I may contact my hair stylist I used, I believe she can do my hair.  We’ll see, but I definitely need to cover some of this gray.  You really can’t see it in this picture, but it’s coming in more.  I took this picture about a month ago.  Gray hair has a mind of it’s own, a little harder to manipulate, but I can still control it with Eco Styler Gel, love that stuff.

When I was packing for the move, either me or the girls gave away my Nike’s.  I want to start walking again now that I’m settled.  I bought these, and I figured one thing out, Nike’s are too narrow for me.  These are K-Swiss and are very comfortable.  My knees were killing me when I finished walking and that was because my darn shoes were too tight!  I can and will start my walks again, thank goodness.  I have been very relaxed (lazy) when it comes to diet and exercise and now that everything is back to normal I will get my schedule together.

How was everyone’s weekend?  Anything special coming up for the holiday this weekend?  We’ll be home, taking it easy, chillin.   Have a great day, and encourage someone today.

What’s Brewing at The Mocha Cafe

It has been a busy week!  I’m really getting my groove back, girls in school, husband getting used to his new work location, it’s all coming together.  Haven’t been able to do much this week, we did go to Fort Leavenworth yesterday to break the place it.  My husband believes in using his military services, and will ask any company if they give a military discount.  He will put that company on the back burner if they don’t.  The brother takes that stuff seriously.

The Rep Todd Akin (R-Mo) doesn’t seem to be going away, we’ll see how that all turns out.  Did you see my open letter to him?  Check it out here.  I try not to use this platform for politics, but I felt I needed to say something in regards to our rights.  I just ask that you all vote, it’s our right and duty.

Did you all see the video clip or read on social media about Tony Farmer, the high school basketball star from Ohio that was convicted for attacking his ex-girlfriend?  He was convicted and sentenced to three years in prison for the attack and fainted during the sentencing.  Please go here to read this article and see the video and tell me what you think.  What if that were your daughter?  Yes, he has ruined his future right now and won’t be able to play college ball, but he beat this young woman up, kicked her repeatedly, while she cowered in the corner trying to protect herself.  This is another one I’ll show my girls so they can see it first hand what I mean about boyfriends, and what to look for.  It can happen to any of them, so I won’t say it can’t happen to my girls.  I pray of course that it won’t, I talk to them about what really happens in life, I don’t sugar coat anything.

I’m getting out this evening, going to see Sparkle with some old friends/co-workers.  I’m excited, haven’t done much face to face socializing in a very long time.  I’ll give details and my opinion about the movie next week, been getting mixed reviews.  I saw the original Sparkle when I was in high school, loved it but I was 15 at the time.  I bought the soundtrack which was done by Aretha Franklin.  Check out this clip with Irene Cara and Philip Michael Thomas, one of my favorite parts of the movie.

As you all know, I’m an independent contractor for Arise, they contract people to do customer service work from home.  I started working for my new client in January, and just got offered a new contract.  Yay and thank you Jesus, it’s hard finding jobs these days and I’m just glad I am working and that I can do it from the comfort of my home.  For those looking to work from home, go to The Work At Home Woman it’s filled with jobs, entreprenuer opportunities and just about anything for women who want to work from home.   Sorry this was so late, have a great weekend.

Wordless Wednesday

Midweek and the house issues continue…I found this picture of my family, boy this was long time ago.  I was 20 and my brother was 17.   In this picture, my daddy is the same age as my husband.  I thought my parents were old, my girls probably think the same thing about me.

I miss my family, get lonely for the old days all the time.   I love my family, it’s been a challenge blending our families, but it’s been worth it.  We took these pictures about 3 years ago, I can’t find the one with all four of us.  Time for new family pictures, this time I want someone to take us to the park or and just take us being ourselves.

There’s nothing like family, I wouldn’t trade my life for anything in the world.  I’d be lost without them.  Have a wonderful evening.

Open Letter to Todd Akin

Rep. Todd Akin (R-Mo),

My sister was raped in 1986, while walking home from catching the bus.  She was 38 years old, a mother of two and a caregiver at the time.  It was a very traumatic experience for us because she made me promise that I wouldn’t tell my parents.  She refused to go to the police, she was so afraid.  I remember it like it happened yesterday, she called me at home and I went running to her, begging and pleading with her to let me call police.  She refused, to this day I still don’t understand why she wouldn’t let me call.  We just cried and I helped her get herself together.  She was my only and older sister,  15 years older than me.  I was a young woman, not sure what to do or how to help her at this painful time in her life.  All I could do is cry with her.

After listening to your statement, over and over I just couldn’t take it anymore.  My definition of rape is when a person forces you to have sex with them, whether it was by grabbing you off the street as this man did my sister, or on a date with a man and you tell his ass no.   Women should be tired of men telling us what to do with our bodies.  I personally do not believe in abortions, but I don’t want to take away any woman’s right to make that choice.  You should withdraw from the race, your apology is not enough.  We, the residents of Missouri do not want you representing us in the United States Senate.

This is a picture of my sister who would have been 65 this year, she’s the same age as you are.  She died in 1997 with her rape still unsolved and no one arrested.  It was a legitimate rape

AARP and Middle Aged

This is the face and story of a middle aged woman….

I started receiving invitations from AARP about 5 years ago via email.  I was kind of offended, I wasn’t old enough for AARP yet, at least I thought so.  Each time I would get something via email or mail, I would joke about it on Facebook.  One friend told me that they offer great discounts and I should check it out.  Discounts?  I sure will, I’ll take advantage of any membership that offers discounts, period.  My husband will ask about a military discount in a heart beat.  I don’t blame him, he earned it.  Ok fast forward 5 years, I have liked the AARP page on Facebook, and they posted a question asking people to name the Kardashian’s in order.  People started going off about who cares and why would they post something so stupid?  I could name Kim, Kourtney and mom Kris, that’s all.  I still can’t think if the others without hitting the Google.  It made me think, do we become less accepting when we get older?  These people were really cranky about the question, I mean going off saying they should focus on other things instead of the Kardashian’s.  It was just something for fun, a trivia  question.  Criticize the Kardashian’s if you want, but Kris Jenner is a hell of a good business woman.   Has she made mistakes?  Yes, but that comes with business.  Lighten up people, I don’t plan to lose my sense of humor or act like I’m ready to be put in the nursing home.

There is another page on Facebook that I’ve liked, “Black Women Are Sexy”, they show different pictures of women, write positive affirmations and other interesting things black women may be interested in.  They posted a picture of a woman this morning, giving her name and age.  She was 47 years old and had on a short dress that was fitting and hitting her curves.  People cut this woman up so bad, mostly women.  I don’t like how the internet has allowed people to be mean to the point that it’s hurtful.  I realize when you upload pictures on the internet, you take your chances.  Check it out here, it’s not a look that I would do, but that’s what makes us different, and we have the right to wear our hair and the kind of clothing that we please.  Most of the responses were from younger women that kept saying, her body is ok, she looks good for her age like she was 70.  Here’s one thing about black women, if you take care of yourself from those early adult years, you know…..when others are abusing drugs or drinking heavily, staying up all night, heavy partying, then when you are 45 and up you will be able to hold on to your looks.  I can only speak for myself.  My class reunion was two years ago, and time hadn’t been kind to some of the women, but I’m telling you, it was because of the abuse they put their bodies through when we were younger.

One of the reasons I started this blog was to blog about my journey, and to support women over 40.  We don’t really have a platform, we get an article here or there.  We have a magazine, but they changed it to add women age 30.  When I was 30, I wasn’t thinking about age 40 until I had a baby at 38.  I want to brand myself, the middle aged diva.  Life is what you make it at any age.  As my momma used to say….keep on living.  Isn’t that the truth.

Friday at The Mocha Cafe

We survived the first day of school, they were so anxious about reconnecting with old friends.  I must say it was quite successful and my oldest auditioned and made concert choir!  Yay!  Both of them have beautiful voices (something they DIDN’T get from me) and I’m glad to see them take advantage of the opportunity to sing.  I said a prayer and sent them on their way.  I am home today for the first time since the end of June!  Doing the happy dance as I type!

My oldest has lost about 30 pounds!  I am so proud of her, she has put her mind to making this change and has really dedicated herself to reaching her goal.  If you all remember, she got sick in June and lost 12 pounds while she was recuperating.  She’s gonna get that new wardrobe from us soon!

Our washer and dryer came today.  I absolutely love them!  I need to get the pedestals but it will have to wait.  I can’t wait to do some laundry, which will probably be this evening.  I have told the girls that I will handle all laundry until I know how to use them.  I’m sure they are happy about that, but they can still fold and put away their clothes.

The new season of Braxton Family Values started last night, they are truly divas in every sense of the word.  I enjoy watching them, that’s about as much drama that I can take with reality TV, go here to watch a sneak peek.  I must admit, Tamar is a bit off the chain for me at times, but we all have someone in our family that brings drama.   I like Tia & Tamera and Mary Mary.  I can’t do the rest, just can’t.   Do you all watch any reality TV?

Well that’s it for me at the Mocha Cafe, have a wonderful weekend everyone!

Desires of The Heart

I blogged about this Saturday night on Natural Sunshine, a community that I belong to for natural hair enthusiasts about doing “you”.   Have you ever done something that you always desired but didn’t because of the way you were raised,  worried how someone would react or because of fear?  It doesn’t have to be something that you would be ashamed of, it can be anything, something adventurous, traveling, skydiving, running a marathon, not wearing makeup in public.  You know how some women are, won’t step outside without any makeup on.  The point I’m trying to make is, what is something that you’ve always wanted to do?  What is holding you back, finances, time, or you?

When I look back at my life so far, I’m happy with my life.  Do I desire to do more?  Of course, within reason.  I still want to travel outside the United States, not sure where.   My husband has been all over, I love hearing his stories about when he was in the military and his travels.  Now that he’s retired, he doesn’t have a desire to travel anymore.  Gotta respect that, but it’s not gonna stop me.  I have to put that on my bucket list.

Don’t laugh, but I used to want to get my nose pierced for many years but I was scared of scaring on my nose because I have keloid skin.  Plus I knew my mother would have a hissy fit, they almost passed out when I moved back from California and was wearing a toe ring!  It was too funny, my daddy said, “you have a ring on your toe”.   Yes I know that daddy.  I know they discussed that one for a few days.   I’ve worn glasses since I was 8 years old and never tried contact lenses, I actually like wearing glasses.  I love how the frames bring out my personality.

I know you all have heard me talking about how I want a new camera, and when I get it I’m gonna take a few lessons.  The camera is an investment and I want to use it right.  I plan to attend a few blogging conferences next year so I have to get ready.  Thanks to LaShawn at My Life, she shared her experiences at the BlogHer conference with her readers and I’ve decided to attend the conference next year in Chicago.  I also want to attend Blogalicious next year.  Those are goals I’m gonna have to work very hard for, but can achieve.

Are you doing what you truly desire?  Do you plan to?
