Recipe of the Week ~ Drunk Beans

Don’t let the name fool you or scare you…..it’s an awesome alternative to chili.

1 cup chopped onion

1 tsp garlic

1 tbsp olive oil

1 16 oz jar Picante Sauce

1 lb Italian Sausage (ground)

1 pkg Smoke Sausage

2 cans of black beans

1 can of beer

1 bundle of cilantro (finely chopped)

Brown the Italian sausage and smoke sausage in separate skillets, drain and set aside.  In a large pot, saute onions and garlic in olive oil until tender, add the beans and cook for about 10 minutes.  Add picante sauce and cook 5 minutes, then add cilantro and 1/2 can of beer.  Add meat and simmer on low for an additional 10 minutes.

Note ~ on the beer, I buy the 20 oz can verses buying a six pack. :)

Recipe of the week will run on Thursdays in time for the weekend.  People used to request this at work for food days.

Moody Monday

Do you ever get the blues?  You know, can’t really put your finger on it, got the blahs, don’t really have an opinion about anything, but don’t want someone to get on your nerves either?  You know it, it’s called having a “mood”.  I have them a lot, especially at this time of my life.  I don’t try to have them, they just creep up on me.  It’s one more of those characteristics of menopause.  Moodiness will break you down and have you crying for no reason.

Perfect example I had to make a business call this morning, the lady was helping me and we got disconnected.  Now knowing that this happens, I called back, put my info in and guess what, I got the same lady.  I asked her what happened, she told me it was a glitch in the system.  I asked her why she didn’t call me back ( I don’t why I asked her that), and she said that she immediately got another call and was unable to call me.  She apologized and I accepted her apology.  Here’s the kicker…my emotions got the best of me, I started crying!  I kid you not….I don’t know why I cried, but it probably had something to do with the nature of my call and having to verify my info all over again, the very long list of questions she had to ask.

I quickly got it together, but was just confused how I lost it and got it together within the same minute.  I need to seriously get on some kind of hormone replacement therapy, and soon…ASAP!  Lawd, help me!  They say this will last 10 years!  I’ve got 7-1/2 years to go!  I really need a good mellow song this evening….have a good one!  Ben Tankard is awesome, enjoy & be encouraged!

My Hair Story

I decided a few months ago that I wanted to grow out my chemically relaxed tresses. I didn’t want to do the “big chop”, I’m trying to wait on that, at least until my birthday in July.  I’ve worn my hair natural several times before and loved it, but gave into the pressure of people and their opinions of my hair.  When I think about it, how sad to give into the pressures of what someone else thinks of you and what you are about.  So not me anymore.

It’s a long process, but I am so excited about the outcome of my natural hair.  I have to admit, I’ve been on the internet fiercely researching natural hair, how to take care of it.  I have joined a few social networks that are supportive of natural hair.  It’s so much out there, not like it was the last time I wore my hair natural over 10 years ago.  The last time I wore my hair natural was 2002, the year I turned 40.  Well, I will be entering a new decade in July and this time when my hair grows out and I do the “big chop”, I plan to keep it that way.

Things are a lot different now, I’m going through menopause and it has affected everything physically including my hair.  My hair has started to shed, the relaxer is just too strong.  My hair is super thin.  I am considering using protective styles but not sure where to start with that.  I’m not really a braid person and I don’t really do wigs, so I’m not sure what to do.  I need something because I’m getting ready to start Zumba and Electric Slide classes again and you know what exercising does to our hair.  The pictures below are examples of what I’m considering as my protective styles.  I’m considering the shape of my face and age.  I try to stay age appropriate with my style.  I’m excited about this transition, let me know if any of you are going natural or considering the transition.  I’ll post a picture after I get my protective style done.  Be encouraged…

Happy Birthday Dr. King!

Let us remember the contributions that civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave to our country and the world, with his message of peace and non violence.  Dr. King would have been 83 years old this year.  My children definitely know who he is and what he has done, so proud of them.  Both of them came to me and explained what Dr. King meant to them, I didn’t start either conversation.  Let’s stay encouraged, the work is not done and remember that we must do our part to keep his dream alive.  Happy Birthday Dr. King!

It’s Almost Over…

Hi everyone, I know it’s been a few days since my last post.  Let me explain…I work from home and I’m training for a new client.  It has been so stressful, taking a course online in a virtual classroom.  It’s about 52 people and 2 instructors.  This course requires self study as well as classroom participation.  I’ve passed the final assessment, but have one more big step and I’m done.

If you are interested in working from home, go to http://www.theworkathomewoman.com and check out all the information provided on this wonderful website.  They have part-time, full-time and other opportunities available for women.   I’m going to put this link as one of my favorite blogs so you can access it when you visit my blog.

I enjoy working from home, I really do.  It takes discipline to work from home and you have to be the kind of person that’s ok not having daily interaction with others.  It’s an adjustment, but has turned out to be one of the best moves I have made.  It has allowed me flexibility because I set my own hours, started my blog, make jewelry and be home for my family.  I never thought I would be the kind of woman that worked from home.  Times have changed, the economy has changed, and there are many opportunities to work from home.  I’m constantly researching ways I can generate income working from home with my computer.  Do some research if working from home is something that you have a desire for.  Don’t forget to check out The Work at Home Woman, it will make you take a serious look at your career situation.  I’ll be back in a few days, hopefully certified and ready to work for my new client!  Pray for a sista!

Are You Spreading The Gospel?

Good afternoon everyone!  Went to church this morning, had a little breakfast, the girls are out and about and the Mr. is resting.  I’m on the computer doing my thing and thinking about what Pastor Clark preached on today.  His sermon today was “I’m Not Ashamed of The Gospel”, Romans 1:16-17.  When we grow in the word, we need to share the gospel with others.  We will need the gospel to move throughout the different stages of our lives.  I know for a fact that God is a healer, protector and provider.  Have you tried him?  I always want to encourage and lift women up to seek God when all else fails you.  We all have to remember because we get in our own way when times get hard, or we are in a valley.  Praying, it’s your chance to talk to God, whether it’s your daily/nightly prayer, or you just need to say a quick word or two to him.  He’s always there for us…ALWAYS.  We that call ourselves Christians, it’s our duty and His order that we minister to one another….Have a wonderful Sunday!

Menopause Monday

Hey everyone, since the purpose of this blog is for women over 40, I was thinking that on Mondays we will discuss the issue of menopause.  Some of you probably haven’t started this journey, or some of you are right in the middle of it like I am.  Can those of us that are say, crazy time?  I have never felt so out of control about my body as I do now.  My mother didn’t talk about menopause, she was that kind of woman that didn’t talk about those type of things with anyone, period.  I had a hysterectomy in July 2009 and that was the beginning of what has been the longest 2-1/2 years of my life.  I remember my doctor telling me that she wouldn’t take my ovaries if she didn’t have to.  I had some other issues going on which resulted in having a complete hysterectomy and the immediate start of menopause.  My doctor started out with a low dosage hormone, but I decided after 3 months to do this on my own, with all the reports of the damages of taking hormones can do to you body.  I admit, I kind of half researched this, I wanted to be a Superwoman.  Please….you don’t have to prove anything when you are going through menopause.  You just need to let your family, friends and co-workers know if you cry at the drop of a hat, eat everything in arms reach, take off as many clothing articles that you can without offending anyone, don’t have you committed….it’s just menopause.

Hot flashes, hot flushes, personal summer moments…however you want to describe them, are real and the number one thing that has prevented me from a decent nights’ sleep since I had my surgery.  You actually feel your body temperature go up to what feels like boiling!  I have ruined a many hairstyle from night sweating (which is one of the reasons I’m going natural).  I have to sit up, grab my fan that is on my nightstand or open a window.  During the summer months, I turn that air down as low as I can get away with.  I know, I should and will consider hormone replacement therapy or HRT.  Trust me I am as we speak because I am definitely no Superwoman.

Let me say this right now, I am not an expert and I have been and will continue researching this subject to make sure anything I say about menopause I can back up with references.  We’ll get into this subject more, including things like how diet affects menopause, taking anti-depressant medication, and just how we can support one another at this time of our life.  Remember, it’s a journey and anything we can do to support one another we should.   Please don’t forget my sistas, God is with us and protects us as we go through any journey…menopause too!
