All That Glitters…

I love jewelry..the shinier the better.  It’s my hobby and I enjoy it.  I love creating something that you can wear with beads, wires and baubles.  When I sit down to make a piece of jewelry, I get absolutely lost in the process.  I have taken 20 minutes to 3 hours to make a piece, just depending on what’s involved in the process.  I have been asked to make jewelry in the past, and have repaired broken pieces for friends.

I have been blessed to now have the time to design and make jewelry.   I’m not in any hurry, I’m just going to make pieces, show them to people, on my Facebook, Twitter, Google+ pages and of course my blog.  I used to make bracelets and earrings as gifts for my friends.  I’ve been asked to make gifts for their family and friends.  My pieces are simple, classic and pretty.

Do you have a hobby that you have considered turning into a side hustle or business?   What recommendations and suggestions do you have?  I am the research queen, so I’m constantly on the Internet researching, that’s how I found different websites where people sell their jewelry.  I’ve also discovered a wonderful website called Etsy.  It’s an website where you can buy/sell handmade or vintage items.  They have Etsy Communities, it’s very interesting.  Check it out, http://www.etsy.com.  One day I will be able to share my Etsy page with you.  Be encouraged, and let your creative side show.

Fashions for Women Over 40

I’m not an expert on fashion but I do know what I like.  I like classic, modern pieces.  I also can and will rock a good pair of jeans.  I also have a off the beaten path, funky side to me.  At times, I feel like I don’t fit in with what I see in the stores, online and in these fashion blogs.  I think I’m going to start featuring clothing that fits my style, including shoes and other accessories.  Let me work on that, get a few ideas and see how I can fit this into my blog.  I did a little retail back in the day and I have a girlfriend that would love to help me on this.   I want to find a couple of websites that feature clothing for mature women that are in that range of not feeling or looking old, but don’t want to look like were 20 (even though I’m sure some of us can!)

Don’t worry, I won’t turn this into another fashion/style blog, but I think it would be fun to include a fashion piece once a month or so.  Fashion is part of our lifestyle, so let’s have some fun with it.  Would love to know what your fashion style is.

Am I My Mothers’ Child?

“You are acting just like yo momma!” I started hearing this from my ex-husband. He would say it to tick me off when we were having an argument. Each time he said it, I would be so upset, I mean almost crying mad! Then other people started to say it too, you are acting just like Calla! I wouldn’t curse at them, but I sure thought about it. I fought that label for as long as I could. Maturity gives you great hindsight, and you think, I am just like her. As a matter of fact, I look just like her. Who else am I suppose to be like? She gave birth to me, raised me, taught me everything I know about being a woman. I have her mannerisms, I look and even sound like her. I wished that the 25 year old me could have appreciated it when being told, you are just like your mother.

Do you all find yourself doing and saying things that your mother used to say? Maybe you didn’t say things exactly like her, but you can appreciate how she must have felt when she was raising you or going through different cycles or changes in life, especially menopause.  That’s when I had that “Ah Ha” moment, I am just like her. I’m sure my daughters probably think I’m worse than grandma. I don’t play, and they know it!

People would say my mother was difficult. I admit, she didn’t play and would cut you with words if she had too. She was hard on my sister and I, she believed that she had to raise us to be responsible women who would be able to take care of ourselves. She was tough on the boys, just not like she was on us. I know why she was like that because she became a single mother at the age of 15. She worked in my uncle’s barbecue restaurant waiting tables, cleaning up and whatever else she was asked to do. We are a product of our environment, but we don’t have to stay there.

Maybe you aren’t like your mother at all, but trust me there is something that you have taken from your mother, whether it’s her looks, personality, tenacity, whatever it is. Momma would think I’m sharing too much with strangers on the “computer”.   Life, family, work they all play a part in our mental well being. We must be determined not to let our environment keep us down to the point that it keeps us from hearing and doing what God has in store for us. Yes, I am Calla Lee Gordon’s daughter, I know that I am making her proud of the woman I turned out to be. I love God, my family and friends. I miss her dearly. If you are fortunate enough to still have your mother in your life, give her a great big hug and tell her thank you for doing such a wonderful job!

My mother passed away 8 years ago today, August 10, 1930 ~ December 26, 2003.  Here’s a dedication to my momma……

Take Time To Renew Yourself

Women are caretakers, it’s comes natural for us.  We have different degrees of nurturing, but it’s just what we do.  How often do you take the time to make sure you have a renewed mind, body & spirit?  Do you get enough sleep?  I take that self assessment every time I start to feel sluggish.   Of course with menopause you feel tired all the time, if you take hormones they help a little.  I make sure I get a good nights’ sleep to renew myself.

One of the ways I renew myself is taking me time.  I work from home so you would think I’m able to do that all of the time but I don’t.  When I’m not working, I’m doing something around the house, running errands or mom taxi.  One of the things I do that gives me that refreshed feeling is when I go to the hair salon.  I get to relax, let my hair stylist take care of me while getting my time in with the ladies at the salon.  We always have a good time, sharing stories about our lives, and Stacey and I are always sharing our entrepreneur dreams and plans with one another.  I always leave with a smile.

Music also helps renew my spirit….gospel, old school R&B and jazz.  When I play my music, my mind travels to the time, place or situation of each song, they all have a story about a time in my life.  I have always related to music like that.  I’m working on my YouTube channel, that’s my new thing!  I have Pandora Radio, iHeartRadio and our CD collection.  It’s truly relaxing and it’s a must for me.

Jewelry making is something I started about six years ago and I love it!  I go bead shopping, and will literally spend hours in there!  So I have to order online most of the time because I get in trouble. I like taking the beads and creating something.  I like working with crystals and sterling silver.  They used to call me LaBeada at work.  It’s relaxing but hard on the eyes…can you say bifocals??

I read my bible and pray to unwind every evening, I’m currently reading a series on YouVersion “Living a Divinely Inspired Life” on my iPad.  I like to read before I go to bed so the last thing on my mind is God and how I can get closer to him.

Share with me how you renew yourself…

Welcome!

Hello, welcome to my journey.  I’ve been putting this off because I was a little nervous about my first blog.  I realized I was trying too hard, I just needed to flow and write what was on my mind.  Blogging isn’t new to me, I thought I didn’t have enough to say to start my own blog.  I started researching blogs for middle aged black women, and didn’t come up with much, actually nothing.  There are blogs and communities that support women over 40…I love them and have joined them,  but nothing for women of color.  I wondered if I started a blog, would I get followers, and do I have what it takes to write/blog on a consistent basis?  I’ve put a lot of thought and research into this, and trust me when I say I’m stepping out on faith, to share my story and opinions about being a middle aged woman.  I’m starting it with a day in the life approach, ask for suggestions on different topics, do some surveys, and have a little fun while we’re here.   I’m not an expert,  I will research topics and provide resources to support what a particular subject is.  I’ll tweak this blog as we go along, I would love to create a community out of this blog for my sistas.  Let me know what you think. I do ask that we respect each other, remember that we are all different and have different opinions, and create a sisterhood like no other.  Looking forward to this journey.

I want to be an encouragement to anyone that reads my blog, I also want to be encouraged and inspired by you all as well.  As we are close out 2011, lets take the time to remember who loves, admires, uplifts, encourages and inspires us.  Also let’s remember who disappointed, hurt and abandoned us, so we can leave it in 2011.  We don’t want to take anything into the new year or our life from this moment on that is going to be a burden or keep us from seeing our future positively.   I leave you with this bible verse, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”  Deuteronomy 31:6 NIV.
